Good morning everyone, in keeping with the recent Pink Floyd
activity, here is the first ever transfer of our Master VHS Cassettes into the
digital domain.
The genesis of this project came about as the result of a very nice, close shot
audience film from September of 1987 at Madison Square Garden. We had already
seen a handful of the Momentary Lapse shows and noticied that although the MSG
film was nice, it was filmed fairly close up and did not capture "the spectacle"
of it all. One wild and crazy night, the idea was hatched to film one of the
upcoming stadium shows from the opposite end of the arena, not so much to
capture the players, but the true essence of this amazing live show. The
decision was made to rent a full sized VHS camcorder and mount it on a tripod.
It was quite a team that went into Sullivan Stadium that night. At least six
people, all with different componets of the mobile video lab concealed on their
person. The most challenging piece was the camcorder, it was huge. One of the
girls wore a wraparound, ankle length skirt.....the comcorder was tied to her
waist and dangling in between her legs, shrouded by the skirt. For added effect,
she used a pair of crutches, appearing disabled which served us better than
expected when the arena staff went out of their way to help her get through the
gates and forgot to search her in the process. I had a gym bag with the tripod
in it, and while going through the gates, one of the guards patted the bag,
noticing the metallic clank. She asked me what was in the bag and I replied
"it's a tripod, I am going to mount a pair of binoculars on it to watch the
show."
Needless to say, everyone got through, all the necessary pieces were in place.
Extra batteries, video tapes, the tripod, a blanket to cover things up....all we
needed were the right seats. We had really nice side tickets and headed for the
back end of the stadium where we found some nice folks who were willing to trade
us their "not so good" seats for a serious upgrade and a copy of the final
result if it was successful.
We all sat down in a row and assembled the equipment under a blanket. Camcorder
mounted on the tripod, laying on its side across our laps. As soon as the lights
went out and the familiar strains of Shine On started to fill the air, off came
the blanket and up went the camera. I remember more than a few of our neighbors
being somewhat shocked by our brazen actions, but nobody gave us up and the
concert was filmed in its entirety.
This recording circulated pretty widely back in the day, a big Floyd collector
was quoted as saying "it's not the best film out there, but it is the
steadiest"...... We are really happy to finally have this out of the vault and
onto your hard drives,
please feel free to share it any way you want to, just be sure to give credit
where it is due.
Lastly, we would like to dedicate this torrent to luciferburns who has done an
awesome job spreading the BT love and keeping the spirit of Team Lampinski alive
by consistently uploading rare, uncirculated recordings that might not other
wise have
seen the light of day. I encourage everyone to get your collections out and
about, time is our greatest enemy and there are too many priceless recordings
that are a hair's breadth away from being lost forever.
The more generous you are with your music, the more it comes back to you....
thanks Mr Burns for a lot of cool music.
Without any further delay, I present for your enjoyment.
