So goes the riff that launched a thousand
lead guitarists - the biggest lip trembling, air punching, classic rock
track of all time.
"Smoke on the Waters" (if you hadn't worked it out already) was the jewel in
the crown of Deep Purple's "Machine Head" album and was an overnight succes
with rock fans the world over.
In the summer of 1989, in order to raise founds for victims of the Armenian
earthquake, Rock Aid Armenia put the word out that they were re-recording
this venerable classic.
The rsponse was phenomenal. Key members of bands such as Iron Maiden, Queen,
Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, Deep Purple, Black Sabath and others, converged on
London's Metropolis Studios to lay down tracks, for what turned out to be a
major piece of rock history.
Herein is the film of those sessions and the final result. So blow up your
air guitar, get your plectrum ready, pose in front of the mirror, pres play
and - Duh duh durh, duh duh-du-durrh !
