DVD 1 1. Syd's First Trip - Summer of 1966 Home Movies, Gog Magog Hills, London; Summer 1966 (early confused as summer of 65!); 8mm movies by Nigel Gordon showing one of the first Syd's mushroom trip. This was appeared on collector's market in 90's. One of the sources is good VHS copy & other is make by Harvested. Thanks Ron, Thanks MOB! 2. "San Francisco" by Anthony Stern, 1968 Anthony Stern developed the concept of the impressionistic documentary with the making of this BFI financed film. The film features a very early version of Interstellar Overdrive. Recorded at Thompson Private Recording Studios on 31 October, 1966. Film actually appeared in 1968. 3. "Tonight Let's All Make Love In London" - Floyd bits, 1967 As we pretty knows, Pink Floyd recorded own music for the soundtrack of this film on 11-12.01.1967 Soundtrack LP (as film) released in 1968. For the first time i included short movie excerpts with original "Interstellar Overdrive" version 4. London 66-67 (Japan edition & More) Filmed: 1) 11/12.01.1967 - Sound Techniques Studio 2) 30.12.1966 - UFO Club 3) 17.01.1967 (??) - Commonwealth Institute, London (??) Live in studio perfomance of 2 songs: IO and Nick's Boogie. Both recordings made for the underground movie "Tonight Let's all Make in London" (see previous chapter). Filmed by Peter Whitehead. Released in 1994. Also film intercut with concert footage of floyd, 14 Hour Technicolour Dream event, The Move & John's Children footage also included. It's included here. Also 1994 promo + VH1 clip you get as nice bonus :) 5. Syd's Silent Home Movies - 1966 or early 67 Don't hold your breath too high! It was widely seen & available snippet of one of Syd's home movies (broadcasts in two documentaries, at least!). Where it was shot & location still a mystery. Probably it was shot in autumn of 66, or early 67? Need to compare Syd's photos from this dates. DVD 2 1. Scene Special (Granada TV, 27-01-67) Pink Floyd's perfomance was filmed on 27 january and clips of "Interstellar Overdrive" and audio of "Matilda's Mother" were used in Granada TV documentary arts programme, which you found on this DVD. Broadcast on the Granada ITV network on 7 february at 10.25pm. It also included coverage of the infamous Albert Hall poetry reading in 1965, perfomance art at the Roundhouse, a "happening" in Picadilly Circus and interviews with various underground figures including Jim Haynes, Barry Miles, John Hopkins & Paul McCartney. (c) Glenn Povey Some Technical info: Complete broadcast was taken from 2nd generation VHS copy, to this day it was best quality copy in circulation. Non-voiceover version actually comes from Granada TV archives, unfortunately audio of early version of "Matilda.." not survived without voiceover. Excerpts are included here for best enjoy and for full picture of London Underground 2. Dope movie (Jan. or Feb. 67) Filmed by underground filmmakers Diane and Sheldon Rochlin for their film "Dope". Before summer of 2009, actually no one floyd collector knows about this footage. It was big surprise for all fans. Short footage of UFO Club also included (& feat. 1 second of further floyd footage!) Date: still unknown. And music ! Some UFO regulars says: it was Soft Machine! 3. Die Jungen Nachtwandler (24.02.1967) 24-02-67 - Late show with Brothers Grimm and film shows. Pink Floyd's perfomance of "IO" and general scenes of UFO Club were filmed by German TV on this night for inclusion in one-hour documentary arts programme entitled "Die Jungen Nachtwandler - London unter 21", that also featured The Who. It was broadcast on the Bayerischer Rundfunk TV network on 3 July 1967 at 11.00pm (c) Glenn Povey Master copy, thankfully, comes to me very recently. It was best ever copy of this footage. Best VHS source included here for historical interest only. See The Who doco "Amazing Journey" i found footage in UFO club, that NOT used in original documentary. This is very brief excerpts of John "Hoppy" Hopkins and John "Junior" Wood from Tomorrow band. Unknown group in focus - actually Soft Machine 4. Arnold Layne (Promo video, late feb. 67) A promotional film for their first single. Filmed at Wittering Beach on the south coast of England by Derek Nice, this promo premiered at the UFO club on 10 March, 1967. Source of master copy (?) is unknown, but 16:9 version are taken from "A Tecnnicolour Dream" DVD. Filmed - late february 67 or very early march. 5. Beach Home Movies (Spring of 67) Interesting footage of Syd and The Pink Floyd running along a beach and also viewing through a view-finder. They all look happy, and the footage is merged with scenes of water. 1min. 56 sec The footage of Syd on the beach is taken from the Pros & Cons 1984 EPK video (at the beginning of the documentary, some brief scenes of Syd appear as incrustations; they were zoomed for the montage) and other short extracts that were broadcast by MTV during the 1988 Over The Wall special (when Rick talks about Syd). Filmed in spring of 67 (c) MOB 6. Abbey Road Home Movies (April 67) 8mm home movies filmed outside of Abbey Road Studios. Filmed probably by Nick Mason. Date is still under the question, but it's looks like April 67. Thanks "Harvested" Again 7. Bouton Rouge (Arnold Layne second promo, 29-04-67) Some floyd's collectors (including me, haha) previously thinks, that this are probably from "Fan Club" programm, but this is not correct. Promo was made in England at early morning of 29 april, then move to Holland to mime the same song on "Fan Club". Back to the UK again - 14 hour Technicolour dream appearance in the morning of 30th! What a crazy day ! It was broadcast on French TV - 21-05-67 in show "Bouton Rouge". First source is non-remastered (by me), 2nd - from Harvested, thanks ! 8. Look Of The Week (14-05-67) - Source 1 On 14-05-1967 Pink Floyd performed "Pow.R.Toh.H." and "Astronomy Domine" live on arts programme "The Look Of The Week" broadcast by BBC2 TV at 11.15pm. Barrett and Waters were also interviewed by the classical music critic Professor Hans Keller, who considered their music to "terribly loud" and a "regression to childhood". This appearance was thankfully archieved and various clips have been used in Pink Floyd related retrospectives, most notably in the "Sound of the 60's" BBC2 series in 1991. Source 2: info on vol.3 DVD 3 1. Look Of The Week – 14.05.1967, Source 2 (BBC 4 rebroadcast + different source of interview) HRV This is latest rebroadcast by BBC. They again repeated famous 'Sound Of The 60's" show probably in 2007. Quality is very good. Source for interview - ********* DVD. I have 2 sources for the complete interview - ********* and unknown VHS. I can't choose by quality, because they are very good, so i included both. 2. Top Of The Pops (See Emily Play) – 6.07.1967 2.1 See Emily Play (Original unedited source) 2.2.See Emily Play (Verruckt89 reconstruction) BBC Lime Grove Studio, Shepherd's Bush, London, England. Pink Floyd performed "See Emily Play" live for the first of three times on the music programme "Top Of The Pops". It was broadcast on BBC1 TV at 7.30pm (c) Glenn Povey This is really reason why i decided to upgrade this DVD. This video surfaced in the summer of 2012, seems like copy taken from BBC screener. I've got complete copy of full recovered episode Top Of The Pops, so here we have the most complete version with additional banter at the end. Verruckt89 in my opinion make the best reconstruction, so i decided to include it here too. 3. Pathe Newsreel (Scarecrow) – filmed on 8.07.1967 3.1 Original Complete Pathe Newsreel (21-09-1967) HRV 3.2 Scarecrow (16:9 Version) 3.3 Pathe Complete Outtakes feat. Pink Floyd, HRV 3.4 Pink Floyd Outtakes, best quality On 8 july Pink Floyd were reported in Melody Maker to be making a promotional film of "Scarecrow" for British Pathe News. Filmed in and around Marbury Country Park in Nortwich prior to their show that evening, the clip was then syndicated throughout the ABC cinema circuit in the summer 1967 and featured the band wandering through wheat fields and having a pretend shoot-out, whilst trying not to collapse into fits of laughter. (c) Glenn Povey Thanks again to guys from *********, who provided best to me this best quality source from VHS. Other non-floyd footage taken directly from Pathe website. It was great news somewhere in 2000's, that guys from Pathe found in their archives uncut tape of all outtakes from this newsreel, including also floyd footage. This tape also presented here in full time (and source of floyd part is the same 16:9 version are taken from "Technicolour Dream" DVD, because to this day it was best ever quality (sadly, that not in 4:3!). Beat Club Mentions – 1967 to 1969 4.1 Hit Parade (22-07-1967) 4.2 “Reaction In G” audio from unknown source, 1969 4.3 Probably Pink Floyd footage, 1969 Sadly, Pink Floyd canceled their performance in Beat Club in august of 1967. Here's presented interesting hit parade, nice document from summer of love era. But then some oddities. 1967-08-01? Reaction In G tape used for the German TV b'cast (Date is some what questionable as the entire band was on holiday during the first 2 weeks of Aug '67 save for 2 recording sessions at EMI.) Reaction In G excerpt was rebroadcast on Beat Club Episode #42 News 1969-04-26 (w/o voiceover) and then 1993-07-02 & 1995-06-05 (w/voiceover) - "There was no show on 1967-08-01, Episode #22 is from 7/22 & #23 from 8/26. Uschi Nerke voiceover version was broadcast on Beat Club Episode #45 News 1969-08-02." ?nd final mystery: during beat club intro i found bit, and this guys in darkness really looks like pink floyd... 5. American Bandstand – 7.11.1967 5.1 Complete (Apples & Oranges, Interview) 5.2 Excerpts without timecode On 7-11-1967 Pink Floyd mimed to "Apples & Oranges" for the music programme "American Bandstand" hosted by Dick Clark, in which the band were also interviewed. It was broadcast (in colour) on the KABC network Channel 7 on 18 November at 11.30am (c) Glenn Povey Okay, the quality isn't great and it still not only has that annoying timecode that we've all seen before, but an additional slate towards the top of the screen. There is also a small black box in which I needed to remove an ID in order to share this. But I still think its quite watchable and don't think I've ever seen it complete like this, from Dick's intro (holding up the Piper LP) through the end of the band interviews. PS. Sorry, but actual gen info is unknown. I captured this from a VHS tape, probably 2nd gen. (c) Ron Toon.Nothing to say really after this! Non timecode footage is from "Eight Miles High" Doco & Syd Barrett Story from VH1 6. Associated Press (9-11-1967) 6.1 "Report On The Hippie Culture in Haigh Asbury" (14-11-1967) 6.2 Austrian Rebroadcast This newsreel is another new item on this DVD. It was shot on the streets of San Francisco, where Pink Floyd concert ad in Fillmore was filmed. This is precious, if very short, another video document of the Floyd first American tour and, to my knownledge, rare among collectors 6. Central Office Of Information (Jugband Blues) – filmed on early December 1967 6.1 Original Uncut Source with original audio 6.2 ********* Remaster 6.3 “Seven Ages Of Rock” version On 9 December members of Pink Floyd and their managers were reported in Melody Maker to be viewing a colour film clip of newly recorded "Jugband Blues" at The Central office of Information for inclusion in a cultural exchange magazine programme. Widely available on the collector's market, this film was networked throughout North America and widely reported to be band's next single. The Recording date and location remains unknown. (c) Glenn Povey 1. First version is probably from NTSC master first gen VHS. This is video as this found - no editing, no audio redub. And mix from this original audio is absolutely unique and unknown. Film was discovered in garden shed in 1999. 2. 2nd version kindly provided to me by Ron Toon, audio now is alright. 3. And final version first broadcasted in 2007 by BBC in "Seven Ages Of Rock' series (part 2). MUCH BETTER quality and picture looks different, promo is incomplete 7. Tomorrow’s World – Filmed on 12.12.1967 7.1 Complete (Green Onions, Unknown song) 7.2 The Story Of Pink Floyd – first mention, 1994 7.3 Roger Waters on Jools Holland Show (without timecode) On 12.12.1967 group were filmed at former landlord Mike Leonard's house for and edition of the "Tomorrow's World" programme that featured his sound and light experiments. To accompany his work the band were seen playing an untitled instrumental piece composed by Waters & Mason. (The Soundtrack also included the Floyd jamming a Booker T & The MG's style improvisation). The programme was broadcast on BBC1 TV on 17.01.1968 at 6.40 PM and repeated for the very first time as part of BBC Omnibus special in 1994 (c) Glenn Povey Mike Leonard have this footage in his private collection for many years and thankfully (BBC has wiped this) it was appeared in collector's circles. Quality is absolutely stunning, only footage have timecode.Non timecode version was broadcast on Jools Holland show and Pink Floyd Omninus doco in 1994. 8. Christmas On Earth Continued – 22.12.1967 8.1 Joe Cocker – “With a Little Help From My friends” promo 8.2 More colour footage from the promo from Hendrix Documentary 8.3.Floyd Footage – zoomed Pink Floyd appeared on last psychedelic major event "Christmas On Earth Continued" on 22 December. It was last Syd Barrett perfomance with the Floyd as 4 piece band. Summer is Love is over. This promo appeared in promotional movie by Tom Weber "Watch Out For Your Ears" with performances by Jimi Hendrix Experience, New Animals & Traffic (traffic footage included only in work print). Floyd footage here listing only 3 seconds, unfortunately. Other groups in this clip: Traffic, Soft Machine, Tomorrow, Hendrix, Graham Bond. 9. Home Movies - Filmed Between 1966 and 1969 9.1 New Edit from best available copy 9.2 Zoomed footage 9.3 Best quality excerpts Location and exact dates of this footage is still unknown. This footage appeared first in Knebworth 1990 promo film about Pink Floyd. Previous source have very bad quality, i found new source from VHS and it was looks much better. This footage contains 1966, 1967 (?) and 1969 home movies edited in one clip. Rumours spreading that this is more and in best quality.. but where ? DVD 4 DL 1. Almost 4 years ago I decided to make first
major DVD compilation of all Syd Barrett materials in circulation. The first set
was called “Ultimate Collection” and “released” in 2009. Then later i updated
this to Rev.A in summer of 2010 and then “Dope” footage appeared, so that was
the birth of Rev.B ?
But this time all is different. You just need to throw away all my previous
DVD’s, because this time I used non-compressed sources for this anthology, they
are also more and more upgrades appeared last time. I decided to make the most
complete picture, using all available sources (for example there was 4 versions
of “Jugband Blues” with different audio and picture, 2 versions of complete “Look
Of The Week”, because I can’t choose what’s the source is the best etc.)
This is 3 DVD set covering the most important years
in Syd and group history – 1966 to 1969. I also added 4th DVD as bonus with
related material (for example, how more Floyd collectors actually seen original
backdrop film from UFO & Roundhouse days called “Speak” by John Latham ?)
