I am calling this "Fractured Fairy Tails," and although this obscure recording is most likely a fake, these tracks have acquired a certain notoriety among Pink Floyd concert audio traders. Some speculate that this recording is just two random guys playing guitar simultaneously, using a cheap tape recorder (to muddy the sound), sometime in the 1980ås.
Conversely, it could also be an erratic Syd Barrett, right before or right after he was cut loose from the band, possibly playing some "new material" with Roger Waters in late 1967 or early 1968 (aka the infamous ôHave You Got It Yet?ö track) as there are no keyboards (Wright) or percussion (Mason) present. There are some vocals buried deep in the mix of Demo 1 which can barely be heard if you listen closely.
It is worthy to note, that the guitar riff after the introduction of "Interstellar Overdrive" is identical to the bass line heard on the ôPiper At The Gates Of Dawnö studio version of this song, which doesnåt appear on earlier versions of this song. This leads to the conclusion that if this track is legitimate, it could have been recorded sometime after the release of ôPiper At The Gates Of Dawn.ö
I have come across several different versions of these "demos" during my time as a ROIO collector, however these are the most complete versions of these tracks I've ever heard. This recording was unidentified in my collection, and was stuck onto the ends of a two show, two tape set. I've had these tapes for years, and didn't know the material was there.
Although I recognized ôIntersteller Overdriveö immediately (the longest version of this song I have ever heard), the other three tracks are unknown, to me at least. The left channel drops out in "Unknown Demo 2" (from 1:40 to 2:23), and the end is cut off "Unknown Demo 3," as the cassette ran out of tape.
Re-aligned stereo channelization to reduce the noise floor as it was slightly off, normalized the overall output levels by scan throughout and increased them by approximately 1-2 dB as needed throughout for a fuller more dynamic range. No noise reduction or EQ was used.
