What an amazing live show this is! I have seen The Wall
6 times now, 3 on the last tour and 3 this tour, and I get into it more every
time. What's not to love? The music we all know and love played to perfection,
the best live sound system I have ever heard, and a mind numbing visual assault
like none other, what more could you ask for? (OK, maybe the other Floyd members
is a given but we all know that ain't happening!). How about a bigger wall?! I
read the Wall Roger built in Vancouver was 500ft long, double the size of the
Wall seen at the arena shows. After seeing the show in Portland and Seattle I
thought I knew the show pretty well but I was pleasantly surprised! I won't give
anything away here for those who have yet to attend one of these stadium shows
but let me just say that it was a very different experience for me. It was
incredible!
As for the audio I have posted here I once again used the Tascam DR-40 and it's
internal mic's without any processing or EQ. I was seated, (well, mostly
standing is more accurate), in section AA-4, 30 rows back on the aisle. I was
quite happy there at just to the left of stage center with a clear view of the
whole enormous wall and back enough to really experience the surround sound.
Just as I had mentioned with the Seattle show, I plan to eventually post a more
refined version at a later date, hopefully with artwork from the pictures taken
that night.
The overall sound of this recording seems cleaner
and more consistent throughout than the Seattle recording to me, probably
because instead of holding the recorder I had it in the chest pocket of my shirt,
(I am 6'4" tall so this actually puts the mic's slightly above most of the
people's heads around me!). Unfortunately, I had an aisle seat and there is a
lot of crowd noise and chatter but I don't think it deters from the recording, (except
when some drunk guy leaned over during the beginning of Comfortably Numb to tell
me he wanted to be as big as me for that song by talking right into my shirt
pocket). You can also hear me asking some people around me if they had any spare
batteries at the beginning of the show since in my haste to get through the
packed house and to my seat I forgot to change the batteries in my recorder from
the night before! As luck would have it, my friend had cancelled out on going
just that morning and I had an extra ticket with me, (and no time to try and
sell it before the show after my drive to B.C. from Tacoma that day). The
batteries held up until the intermission so I walked the edge of the floor level
offering my extra seat up for anyone looking to upgrade that could pay in AA's!
Do you know how hard it is to find someone at a concert anymore that actually
has batteries on them? Everyone uses their phones now! I did manage to get my
batteries before the start of the second half. I was even fortunate enough to
make a deal that included a sampling of some of Vancouver's most popular
agricultural export to the United States! I almost didn't get the batteries into
the recorder quick enough due to having compromised my motor skills in the
previously mentioned bartering exchange during the intermission so please
forgive the few seconds of noise at the beginning of Hey You as I am trying to
get the damn thing into my pocket!
